Utah State: Instant Rant

Posted by NateHeupel on September 4th, 2010 under Football

Oh my dear God. That was an absolutely miserable performance by everyone not named Ryan Broyles and DeMarco Murray. I’m truly grateful I was watching that game at Buffalo Wild Wings, because I would’ve destroyed things at home. We looked like the Bad News Bears. And not the douchey Disney remake Bears. I mean the dog-shit useless 1976 Bears…except without the punk on the dirt bike who could hit a ton and the chick pitcher.

QB: Landry Jones has not progressed at all. Locks on to his 1st receiver, no pocket presence whatsoever, unable to go through his progressions. He had guys getting open and he was completely missing them. Uncle Rico is back.

RB: One of our rare bright spots. DeMarco Murray was toting the mail and set up most of the big runs on his own. Jermie Calhoun was acceptable if not great. Trey Millard is as good as advertised.

WR: The other bright spot. Ryan Broyles proved he’s the best WR in the conference. Cameron Kenney looked a lot better, but his route running still leaves something to be desired. Kenny Stills has earned a starting job, but because he’s frequently a 2nd read, Jones will rarely get the ball to him. TE is a complete vacuum of suck. Ratterree and Hanna were complete non-factors. Hanna’s blocking was mediocre at best. If Haywood is that much better of a receiver, it’s time to put him on the field.

OL: We’re running behind the right side or not at all. The interior of the OL is the strength, but Ben Habern made a number of stupid mistakes in blitz pickup. Stephenson needs time despite having talent. Good and Evans were both very solid. Mensik is going to get bitch slapped by Acho.

DL: We missed Frank Alexander and healthy Adrian Taylor. Ronnell Lewis isn’t a full time DE, he’s a rush LB. The problem isn’t that the DL wasn’t getting penetration. The problem is that they were overrunning the play and the QB. Casey Taylor is a run stopper only. Stacey McGee was good in spots. McFarland was good. but not great. Adrian Taylor is not ready to play against FSU. He got whipped more than once.

LB: Travis Lewis was the only bright spot. Tom Wort was undisciplined and made stupid mistakes.

DB: Shit. Fleming got ABUSED, but he did come up with a clutch interception late in the game. He’s a liability. Hurst was better but even he was still prone to lapses. Jonathon Nelson was somewhere between Fleming and Hurst. Quentin Carter is a run support safety, but he’s still not a weakness. Tony Jefferson is going to be great.

Special Teams: Tress Way. 85 yard punt. Paddy O’Hara didn’t miss any field goals. Nothing great, but they weren’t a liability either.

Overall: If we don’t turn this around, and fast, we’re losing no less than 3 games this year.

There’s more to come. I’m going to address the outcomes we got later to the issues I mentioned earlier this week.

FWIW, several teams struggled this week. Florida looked absolutely inept on offense and won on defense and special teams. The Gators must have had a dozen botched shotgun snaps, some on the center and some on Brantley–just brutal.

Muschamp is trying to re-make Texas into an SEC style team. Pounding the ball with a few play-action passes on offense and athletic, suffocating defense that can score. Long way to go there. A couple of flukey plays made the score closer than it should have been. We are screwed if either Gilbert or Kheeston Randall get hurt. Even if they stay healthy Texas probably loses a game or two. The number of first and second year players getting a lot of snaps suggests the coaches are looking fown the road a year or two.

  2. Texas, FLorida and OU all looked a bit suspect. It’s early. Bama seemed to crush their guys.

Should be an interesting year in FBS.

  3. Typing mad is fun!

  4. I don’t think Kenny Stills really played well. I have talked to a few people who gave me the impression a lot of the incompletions that were WTF moments were Jones throwing to where Stills was supposed to be and him not being there. Chalk it up to a freshman in his first game. Hope that gets fixed.

Cam Kenney was way better than last year. No drops that I can remember.

  5. I saw that, too, 15. Stills and Kenney both broke off routes early. Stills, on the whole, wasn’t a liability, and that’s a plus from last year’s WR corps.
