There’s a few interesting surprises here, even when you consider how very little this chart means.
I fully expected Ronnell Lewis to end up at MLB because of his ferocity, speed, and size, but coaches were absolutely raving about Tom Wort at MLB before his ACL tear. It appears they’re going with the structure that gets as much of our LB talent on the field at once. With Ronnell Lewis at SLB, it seems clear that coaches have faith in his ability to cover TEs or RBs out of the backfield, and his performance on kick coverage would indicate he is capable of this.
Jermie Calhoun is listed as the #2 RB. It will be interesting to see if Brennan Clay or Roy Finch can push him in the fall. DeMarco Murray is our #1 RB, and we need him healthy. Otherwise, we’ve got a ton of talent, but very little experience to go with it.
Donald Stephenson going from a one year “redshirt” suspension to projected starting LT might tell you why Juco OT recruit John Cullen went to Utah. Having a true freshman already listed as your #2 LG tells you just how hurting we are for depth. So does moving one of your TE’s (Ikard) to backup C. Austin Haywood better be everything he appeared to be in his senior film, because we need him immediately.
The starting WR trio from the Sun Bowl appears to remain intact. Jaz Reynolds and UT’s Greg Timmons came from the same class of the same high school, and OU coaches, particularly Jay Norvell, thought Reynolds was the better WR. While Reynolds actually stepped up as the year went on, becoming a fairly solid #3 option, I think this has more to do with the fact that OU is getting back to what got us to the top in the first place: player development.
Justin Chaisson is already listed as a #2 DE. Reports out of practice last year indicated that he was damn near unblockable on the scout team, so this is not much of a surprise. I was against bringing him on in the first place without some major strings attached, but he’s kept his head down and his nose clean so far. I’m curious what RJ Washington is doing (or failing to do) that he’s not getting on the field.
Thoughts?

Is Adrian Taylor going to be ready for spring practice?

Is Ronnell Lewis the next vomit-drinking badass at LB?

And where the fuck is RJ Washington?

HJ,
Coaches aren’t expecting to have Adrian Taylor back until this summer from what I understand. His break was a clean break (as compared to a spiral fracture), so he should recover 100%. This is a good thing for OU, because Adrian Taylor is a known quantity. We need to see more of what McFarland, Casey Walker, and Stacy McGee can do. If Torrea Peterson or Eric Humphrey could’ve got on campus for the spring, I think either or both could’ve gotten into the rotation.
Vasher,
Yes, Ronnell Lewis is the next badass OU linebacker. Someone found a video online of him knocking some poor white RB unconscious…in 7th grade. Coaches have high hopes for Tom Wort, too, but I get a bad feeling he’s Ryan Reynolds part deux. Lewis is the real deal, though. He hits as if he hates you the way SEC coaches hate words like “integrity”.
RJ Washington just isn’t putting shit together in practice. I find this strange because he’s easily the most physically gifted DE we’ve got right now. OU has a bad habit of this kind of shit, though. Travis Lewis was milliseconds from transferring before Austin Box got injured and got Wally Pipped.

I like Justin Chaisson as your DE. He’s got all the tools to make a quality end.

Agitator,
I see what you did there. Very nice.

I sure like the looks of the defense. The difference between 11-1/10-2 and 8-4 will be the Offensive line development and the maturity of Jones.

Stoops will say at some point this spring, about the D: “yeah it sure has the potential to be better than last year, but guys have to prove it on the field.” says it every year.
Then he will say about the OL, “Guys have to step up and improve their game. We certainly expect them too. A lot will depend on whether they do the work in the off season. Buy yeah we have the talent to be better at OL next year.’
Then about the QB he will say. “Landry really came on last year. we’re expecting big things from him this year. That’s why we recruited him. we knew he had all the skills and could be a leader. He started to show that at the end of the year and we expect it to carry over to next year.”
blah blah blah.
Same stuff from Wilson, only laid on a lot thicker.

No, I don’t think Adrian Taylor will be ready until summer.
Sooo excited about the linebackers. I can’t wait to see what Tom Wort does. I don’t think we will lose depth at this position. Austin Box will be prepared to fill in at middle, wide, or inside.
It should be interesting to see what Jermie Calhoun does. Maybe he lacks the vision to push Demarco, we’ll see. BTW, let’s hope Demarco stays healthy. It’s too bad Brennan Clay or Roy Finch didn’t enroll early.
