The Strange Story of Corey Nelson

Posted by NateHeupel on January 29th, 2010 under Football, Recruiting

This morning the OUInsider.com website announced that Corey Nelson had switched his commitment to OU.  Sooners’ fans were consoled by this news after the news of UT signing Jordan Hicks and Jackson Jeffcoat.  Even TexAgs.com mods were indicating this to be true.

Then, things got weird.  OUInsider and ESPN started backing off of their stories.  Later in the morning, TexAgs.com posted a text message from Nelson that said:

“I’m not committed to OU and I will remain an Aggie. It’s my future. Report that please. Tell everyone I’m through with recruiting and I will remain at A&M. It’s my future.”

There is a widespread belief that OUInsider reported a silent commit that wasn’t supposed to be known until national signing day.  Essentially, an OU sports site may have cost OU one of the biggest defensive recruits out there.

I put no stock in that theory. Don’t get me wrong, it might be true, but I think it’s more likely that this kid grew up loving A&M.  If he really wants to develop as a LB, which it seems like he does, he’d go to OU.  Some kids just want to play for the school they grew up loving.

Either way, this is a testimony to the insanity of recruiting.  That and Trips Right admitting he prioritized monitoring recruiting  This story went one way, then another, then back in less than 24 hours.

  1. Aggy is the best place for him and not going to 0U makes me happy. Win-win.

We close with two 5 stars and y’all can’t even steal from aggy. What a wonderful world, indeed..

  3. There is a widespread belief that OUInsider reported a silent commit that wasn’t supposed to be known until national signing day. Essentially, an OU sports site may have cost OU one of the biggest defensive recruits out there.

Yeah, I’m with you Nate. I think this is silly.

It’s not like someone was held hostage and would only be released if he waited tlll signing day to announce the switch.

    Unless it is…

  4. Don’t get me wrong, Ripley, the idea is facially plausible. There are a very small handful of states where the pressure from the local community is so psychotic/intense that it can change a player’s mind. Alabama is one such state, and Texas is another.

To this day, OU coaches are upset about losing Julio Jones to Alabama because Jones had given them every indication he was committing to OU. Hell, he flat out said as much. He loved our wide-open offense compared to Alabama’s power running style, and the fact that we were recruiting legitimately solid passing QBs compared to Saban getting guys who were shockingly not good throwers. He knew that at OU, he would be “the guy” in our offense, and he knew that at Alabama he could develop his blocking skills. But the coaches didn’t count on the fact that his entire community and the entire state came down on him like a yellow hammer. The pressure was too much, and he’s since ended up being a complete and utter waste of talent at Alabama.

I can’t help but wonder if UT’s and Florida’s defenses would’ve been able to shut down the Bradford to Jones connection in 2008. Covering a pair of 2nd tier receivers and Ryan Broyles gave Muschamp fits aplenty (giving up 5 TDs and 350+ yards), and Florida made their living off of being able to overpower OU’s undersized receivers to nullify Bradford’s accuracy. Is one WR worth 10 points in two different games? I think he is when he’s got the single best passer in college football throwing to him.

  5. “Covering a pair of 2nd tier receivers and Ryan Broyles gave Muschamp fits aplenty (giving up 5 TDs and 350+ yards), ”

and the best TE in the country. Anything to take throws away from Gresham would be fine with me. We had 0 problem covering Jones this year. He’s a slower Adron Tennel with hands. you heard me.

  6. Good stuff, Nate. You should, you know, like, blog more often.

Ok Nate, go and have wet dreams about Jones playing for you. You want to see messy sheets? Picture VY and AD in the same backfield.

    Don’t listen to Sailor.

  8. Magnus, UT would’ve landed AD if your head coach didn’t have such a ridiculous hard-on for seniority at RB. AD made it clear: I get a shot at the starting job as a true freshman, or I’m not interested. That’s why his signature came down to OU and USC, and not OU and UT. Your program’s arrogance, of which many of you are proud, bit you in the ass here. Don’t give me any bullshit about “El Ced” either. He was a JV player compared to AD, and we all knew it.

What’s more is that your OC is a complete retard of a man-child who would’ve tried to run the purest of pure downhill, between-the-tackles running backs out of a fucking shotgun zone read at least 15 times a game. OU changed their offense around AD. Texas had the single most dynamic QB of the last 50 years, and you tried to make VY fit your style.

That’s the difference, magnus. That’s why your point is moot, and mine is valid. UT tries to bend players to their offense. You would’ve spent 3 years trying to make the ultimate zone-read QB work with the prototypical I-formation RB. As we have many times before, the University of Oklahoma thanks the University of Texas for retaining Greg Davis.

    @dick

Do you realize how many times Adron Tennell got wide open and dropped the ball? I’ll put it to you this way. Adron Tennell with hands is the best WR in the Big 12 in 2009. Better than Jordan Shipley, better than Ryan Broyles. You heard me.

  9. I really have no idea how the rumor got started, but Nelson called the Bright Complex at A&M early Friday morning to report that the stuff being put out on ESPN was false. And he was, reportedly, pretty upset about it.

Trust me, kids often say nice things to coaches when they’re visiting – geez, they’re usually nice guys and they’re sitting right there in your living room.

We’ll probably never know how that false story got out there, but OUInsider sure ended up with egg on their face.

  10. “What’s more is that your OC is a complete retard of a man-child who would’ve tried to run the purest of pure downhill, between-the-tackles running backs out of a fucking shotgun zone read at least 15 times a game. OU changed their offense around AD. Texas had the single most dynamic QB of the last 50 years, and you tried to make VY fit your style.”

Ah Nate you steaming bundle of Okie anger and inferiority complex you always entertain.

Yes Greg Davis tried to fit a player into a system, but tell me what established OC doesn’t at least try to do that for a little. You have to give him credit though for reengineering the offense between the Missouri and Tech games Vince’s sophomore year. I think he didn’t lose a game after that with Vince.

Plus this “complete retard” while he is not perfect is sure doing better than yours head-to-head and in big games. (and no I don’t count beating Stanford as a big game).

  11. bob,

Greg Davis didn’t “re-engineer” the offense. He went back to the exact same shit right up until halftime of the 2005 MNC game against USC. It wasn’t until he basically let go of the reins and cut VY loose that Texas took charge of the game.

And I’ll only mention briefly that our UT compatriots at Barking Carnival have repeatedly groaned about the fact that UT’s offense under Colt McCoy was at its best when McCoy and his receivers were improvising on the fly. In other words, when Greg’s influence was minimized, UT’s offense was optimized.

I’ve said it before on BC, I’ll say it here. If UT gets a solid OC to replace Greg Davis, you’ve got a dynasty that would make USC look pathetic. I’m talking no less than 3 MNC’s in 6 years.

Finally, trying to give Greg Davis credit for UT’s recent success is like giving Brent Venables credit for the offense-driven OU teams from 2004-2008. Greg Davis has had nothing to do with UT’s recent success. Will Muschamp has had EVERYTHING to do with it.

  12. “Don’t give me any bullshit about “El Ced” either. He was a JV player compared to AD, and we all knew it.”

I hear you, but that JV player won the Doak Walker when Peterson was a freshman. Mack would have had to lie to Peterson in order to promise him a shot at starting. Because he wasn’t going to start over Benson as a freshman.

    nordberg…

I’m on the Doak Walker Committee now (not then). No bullshit.

At that time the Committee had a no freshmen policy. They changed it that year, for Peterson. He was eligible, but not “favored.”

Only in the last three years, Tebow, Bradford, Ingram, has the unwritten rule of no underclassmen for major awards been broken.

  14. Ag,

James Hale (the primary OUInsider reporter) spoke with Nelson Thursday night. On his radio show, Hale stated that Nelson unequivocally committed to OU as of Thursday night. Apparently, that changed in the morning. I think your “false story” angle is way too optimistic with respect to the Maroon Nation. This wasn’t where a kid said some nice things to the coaches that were taken way out of proportion. It seems pretty obvious that this wasn’t a false story.

The most logical chain of events is as folllows: Nelson got fired up about OU Thursday night, committed to Coach Venables after hearing the “we can get you into the NFL” sales pitch…and then he woke up in a room surrounded by the Maroon and White and had buyer’s remorse, so to speak. This kid is, as I understand, a huge Aggie fan. But when a guy who turned Rufus Alexander into a dude who was 1st team All Big 12 and made the Vikes roster tells you he can get you into the league, you listen if only for a minute.

Remember Glengarry Glen Ross? There’s a scene where Ricky Roma gets a guy so fired up that he’ll do anything Roma says…including making a horrible purchase of real estate. When the guy finally has a chance to calm down and think it over, he backs out. Same situation. Venables came in and got Nelson all fired up about what he could do at OU and what OU could do for him as a LB in particular. He slept on it, thought it over, and decided that wasn’t what he wanted to make his college choice on.

What makes the story so interesting is how quickly it evolved, and, more importantly, how rapidly everyone was kept abreast of developments thanks to text messaging and instant sports news.

  15. Trust me, kids often say nice things to coaches when they’re visiting – geez, they’re usually nice guys and they’re sitting right there in your living room.

You don’t think the OU staff and the guys at OU Insider have dealt with commits before? They probably have the experience to know when a kid is actually committing versus just saying nice things.

Another wrinkle to the story is that a USC fan site reported on Friday that Nelson had told USC coaches that he was canceling his scheduled visit to LA because he was committed to Oklahoma.

I don’t think there’s really any way to spin it other than that Nelson did commit to OU, at least for a brief time. Nate’s last post seems like the most plausible explanation for what happened.

  16. I’ve said it before on BC, I’ll say it here. If UT gets a solid OC to replace Greg Davis, you’ve got a dynasty that would make USC look pathetic. I’m talking no less than 3 MNC’s in 6 years.

    That’s just mean.

You could hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson standing on his fucking head and he’d still take it to the house at the college level. What a beast.

Cedric Benson was not Kejuan Jones. He is/was an exceptional back, and you don’t take a guy like that and discard him, especially as a senior. What kind of message does that send to the locker room? Remember, keeping the team committed is one of Mack’s strong suits, and I would never second guess his judgement on things like this.

  18. NDS, that wasn’t my point. Mack wasn’t going to put a guy like Benson on the bench as a senior, in favor of a true freshman, no matter how beastly that true freshman was.

  19. “He is/was an exceptional back, and you don’t take a guy like that and discard him, especially as a senior. What kind of message does that send to the locker room?”
“Mack wasn’t going to put a guy like Benson on the bench as a senior, in favor of a true freshman, no matter how beastly that true freshman was.”

Taylor, it sends the message that Texas isn’t about getting buttfucked to the tune of 65-13, and shut out 12-0. Texas is about winning. Texas gets the best Texas players, and Texas will put the best players on the field. Signed, Will Muschamp.

nordberg, that is precisely why UT got routed for 5 years straight. Mack Brown wouldn’t make the hard choice.

  20. “nordberg, that is precisely why UT got routed for 5 years straight. Mack Brown wouldn’t make the hard choice.”

Nate, I’d submit that this is precisely why Mack remains a preeminent recruiter who is able to consistently field strong and talented teams. When he gives a kid his word he keeps it. It may cost you in a given year, but it helps you build a program.

  21. Don’t give me any bullshit about “El Ced” either. He was a JV player compared to AD, and we all knew it.

Our JV player finished his career as the sixth best career rusher in NCAA history. He wasn’t going to be benched by a freshman. What Peterson proved was he was all about Peterson. He would have won a MNC at Texas, but he opted for stats and a free car. Shit happens.

Btw, let’s see how our JV player stacked up against the Varsity, this year:

    Regular Season:

    Player………Rushes….Yards….Per Carry….Per Game………TD……Fumbles

    Peterson…….314……….1383………..4.4…………..86.4……………12………..6

    Benson……….301……….1251………..4.2…………..96.2……………..6………..1

    Playoffs:

    Player………Rushes….Yards….Per Carry….Per Game………TD……Fumbles

    Peterson………51………. 185………..3.6…………..92.5……………..3…………2

    Benson………. 21…………169………..8.0…………..169………………1…………0

Peterson gets the edge in touchdowns. Yardage is pretty comparable. I’m struck by how often the varsity kid fumbles.

  22. Blueshorn,

El Ced has about 3600 yds and 18 TDs on 935 carries in five years. Varsity has about 4500 yds and 40 TDs on 915 carries in three years. Please be seated.

    ghost,

When he gives a kid his word he keeps it. It may cost you in a given year, but it helps you build a program.

Stoops is no different, contrary to what the UT hordes think. When the Stoops to ND rumors were flying, a number of major commentators noted that Stoops speaking out against the rumors indicated to them that they were bullshit. Every recruit/player who’s left here has said pretty much the same thing whether their opinion of the program was good or bad: Stoops may be arrogant and he may be a prick, but he’s honest.

So why is it that UT is now the dominant program of the Big 12? What helps you build a program is a commitment to winning and a strong recruiting base. That’s why UT didn’t truly turn the corner until Muschamp got on board. He brought the SEC’s win-at-all-costs mentality with him.

  23. Yeah, I don’t disagree that Muschamp is helping. But we won the national title without him. The year to year consistency has been really solid too, but last year that was as much, or more, due to McCoy playing out of his mind as any defensive recruiting or scheming. Thus year the defense carried us, mostly. So I think Muschamp has been a big positive, but we weren’t exactly floundering before he came.

For the record, I’m the guy who said that I’d keep Mack over Muschamp today if given the choice. I know what we get with Mack and I’ll take it.

I don’t know much about Stoops integrity, and won’t pretend otherwise. He’s a football coach, so I assumed he was an asshole. There aren’t a lot of good ones who I’d want to hang out with.

  24. NateHeupel,

You have a lot more access to what James Hale said happened than I do. All I know is that Nelson said he never committed to OU.

Regardless of how it played out (who said what to whom), people who look back on the whole thing (people not of A&M or OU ilk) will only remember that OU Insder ran a story that ended up being dead wrong.

  25. Benson kind of ripped off 1800+ yards and 20 TD’s in his senior season, you may want to tap the brakes on the wisdom of not starting him being blatantly obvious to every troglodyte in le Dordogne.

  26. I like how Nate has gone discussing the loss of Nelson to defending how awesome OU was 7 years ago and that Adrian Peterson was better than Cedric Benson. God it must suck to be an OU fan now.

  27. Nate,

El Ced’s problems in Chicago have been well-documented and it’s widely known that they didn’t want him. He also had some injury problems. Now that his career has been revived in Cincy, he’s playing like the Ced of old, even though he’s several years older than (Fumbles) All-Day. They’re both great backs and the JV comment was a the kind of cheap shot we’ve learned to expect from you and your ilk. Paired with Vince, Peterson could have won it all and perhaps more than once. It sucks for him, but life is all about choices and consequences.

  28. @Bob Loblaw
Please go back and read who made the first comment about Adrian Peterson and Vince Young. Thanks for your careful attention. Your comments are welcomed!

    @blueshorn
A guy with your history of comments and postings on Barking Carnival about OU has absolutely no right to whine about “cheap shots”. It’s first rate hypocrisy, and that’s precisely what I’ve come to expect from you and your ilk. It’s okay to talk about OU being dirty despite the fact that you have no proof and only bitter resentment to Texas players who didn’t slob on Bevo’s knob, but if OU fans bring up the empirically verifiable fact that going to UT gives a kid a one in four shot at an alcohol-related offense or a felony charge…well, that shit just isn’t right.

  29. I have no proof that 0U built its winning tradition on cheating, beginning after WWII? Hilarious.

  30. Hey Nate,

There’s an interesting article on Burnt Orange Nation, suggesting that Jarret Lake was thrown under the bus by Big Game Bob to make room for Nelson. I wonder if you’d care to enlighten us on what’s going on, there? The whole thing looks awfully dirty:

    http://www.burntorangenation.com/2010/2/3/1291832/ou-throws-jarrett-lake-under-the

  31. Blueshorn,

Take a look at TaylorTRoom’s history of recruiting cheating series back over at BC. Fascinating stuff. His take on OU’s early success will probably disappoint you.

As for the Lake situation, I already commented on that over at BC on their NSD thread. If you’re relying on “Wrangler86″ as your source of information on OU football, you are completely retarded, and there is no saving you.

For example, ask OU fans, and they’ll claim that McFarland was telling the truth about UT boosters offering his mom “no-interest loans” and that the Texas Exes all over the state went apeshit and started acting like bitter Aggie fans. The whole deal looks awfully dirty, and Texas is the one in the mud. OR…. ask UT fans, and McFarland would’ve been a UT commit had it not been for a secret payoff and a hit piece in the NY Times. What happened? Depends on who you ask.

  32. Nate,

This is all I see you said about Lake on the BC NSD thread:

That means that, for now, we have to presume all the slots are full and taking one guy means dropping another. Lake was a reach offer and maybe a bit of a project at LB. Nelson is a much better prospect at the position.

I’d like for you to comment on the notion that Lake was thrown under the bus and that Lake’s recruitment was dirty from the start.

In any event, I take it that you think there’s nothing wrong with dropping a long-standing commitment to a kid at the last minute to get a better player who punked another school. Or am I missing something?
