This is the lowest point in the Stoops era without question.
Landry Jones is not good enough to play quarterback at Oklahoma. You have to go back to days of Eric Moore and Kelly Phelps to see such horrible quarterback play at OU. That performance last night was sub-Garrick McGee, sub-Justin Fuente, sub-Tink/Steve Collins.
Stoops may say that the first interception was the killer because it gave Nebraska the ball at the one, but the picks in the fourth quarter, especially the last one, clearly showed a player that is in over his head. That last pass was literally chucked down the field up for grabs. There wasn’t an OU receiver within 15 yards of it, and he wasn’t about to be sacked or hit.
This season is long since over, and if you didn’t believe it before last night, you must now. I said it a month ago that this is a 6-6 team. We’re not going to win in Lubbock and I don’t see how we beat OSU, even at home. With that in mind, and knowing Jones can’t be the future at QB, it’s time to take the redshirt off of Drew Allen and see what he has. That might sound crazy on the surface, but the reason I say it is so that we don’t blow next season breaking in another freshman. We have Air Force, Florida State and Cincinnati in September. Get Allen some game reps in these last three games, then focus on him in the Spring to be ready to hit the ground running in the Fall of 2010.
It’s a blasted shame that this defense has to play with this offense. What a waste! Nebraska had half of their total yards on three plays, their only three plays over 10 yards. But this Oklahoma offense just can’t get out of it’s own way. EVERY positive play was immediately followed up by a penalty or negative play. How many fourth and one’s are we going to screw up with false start penalties? There is no discipline in that offensive line. I can handle occasional missed assignments by a young line against a good defense, but continually shooting yourself in the foot in your NINTH game is inexcusable.
And I’m not the typical Kevin Wilson hater, but given this line and this quarterback, don’t you simplify the play book a little? Worked with Nate Hybl and ’01-’02 Jason White. And don’t ever put Adron Tennell on the field again. He simply will not catch the ball when it is thrown to him. There was a play last night where he was open and behind the secondary. Jones put the ball up. In mid flight I leaned over to my friend and said “he isn’t going to catch it.” He didn’t. Then dropped three more balls later.
I knew after the second possession last night that we were going to lose. The book on OU is, “don’t let them jump on you in the first quarter and they’ll start to doubt.” I got news, boys, it’s true. We are frontrunners. This team still hasn’t given up a point in the first quarter, but when it doesn’t put it in the end zone early, it craters.
The last three games of this season don’t really mean much. We have to find out who can play offensively. If we can find an answer at QB, and with Murray presumably returning next year, there’s a chance we can be a good offense again. But every job on the offensive line, and the quarterback position, need to be thrown open to competition this week and whoever wins those jobs does, regardless of their status.
That looked like a John Blake team last night, and that is something I never thought I’d see again.

Landry Jones got exposed for what he is against a good defense. He is not accurate with the football. He was getting away with some bad throws earlier against weaker teams. He had a lot of open receivers that he just missed.
That was one of the toughest games I have sat through during the Stoops era.

I played with Drew Allen for 6 years, and I’m not sure whether he would be a better choice than Jones at this point. Allen has a very bad habit of putting all of the pressure on himself to create, and tends to force throws when his first read isn’t open. He is a much more mobile QB than Jones, but I think that he would be throwing just as many interceptions against good defenses.

The problem with your team is simple.
OU didn’t get these guys valuable reps last season in blowout wins, and they are paying for it in spades. Next time, quit with the 60 point games, and let the backups see the field.

Disappointing to see you saying a loss to Nebraska is the “lowest point of the Stoops era.”

I think the main problem with Jones is his footwork. I cannot count how many times Landry has thrown off his back foot when he clearly had time to plant. Granted the OL has not helped him, but even with time, he tends to throw as he is backing up, moving to the side and never stepping into a throw. He clearly has a good arm, but how many floaters? It kills his accuracy, if he has it.

RedCorn,
No disrespect intended. Your defense played very well and Suh is just awesome.
It’s not the loss…It’s how we lost
My remarks are simple frustration over our shitty inconsistant offense and four losses from a team that we thought (we were told) was going to compete for a National Championship.
Soonervino – Agreed on the mechanics. Hopefully he can work through it.
Do you think we should ditch the no huddle now the Gresh and Sam are gone? Seems that all the advantages we used to get with Gresh’s mismatches and Sam’s quick decision making are now gone and we just make mistakes and give the other team the ball back quicker.

With a competent kicking game, OU wins 2 (BYU, Neb), maybe 3 (UT). The defense is suffering failures in 2 units (offense and kicking game).
The OL just hasn’t improved during the year. In the horrid 2005 season, the OL appeared to progress as the year wore on. Though pass blocking was actually sort of OK Saturday, which is why Jones threw 58 times, the deficiencies continue to mount. I think reason we have left the screen game behind is that it is too complex for our OL that can’t remember a snap count. The receiver drops are one thing, the OL failures another, the response of Jones on Saturday the 3rd. Jones can’t throw on the run, we can run block, and Jones doesn’t reliably hit receivers in stride making big plays uncommon.
A&M is not a gimme for this team. Against reasonable competition (Big12 + Ark), they average 30 points/game or about a touchdown more than the their opponents generally give up. OU’s defense surrenders about 14 points/game (throwing out Idaho St.). So A&M will get about 20 points. A&M’s defense is awful as they give up about 30 points/game to the same 6 teams (Big12 + Ark) and about 10 points more than they average against reasonable competition. Against teams other than Idaho St., OU averages 25 points/game. So a 30 – 20 game is likely in Norman. OU should be a TD dog in Lubbock.

Excellent summary of our season. Landry looked fine at home against bad teams. In his 3 road games, he had many opportunities to make the right pass and for whatever reason (footwork, poor blocking by the OL or dropped passes) never hit them. We’re in all 3 games at the end with scoring opportunities and failed in all of them.

[...] Andre Ware predicted 4 losses for the Okies before this season started. Soonerfans.com mocked him as though he were below them in the brain matter ladder. That thread is still alive over there and it is awesome. Facing down ATM, Tech and OSU, plus a bowl, feels like a 5 loss or worse season to me. Their defense is almost as good as their offense is bad. Landry Jones looks bad and cannot, absolutely cannot, throw in a rolling pocket or on the move. I remember when people gave a lot of credence to the concept of Bomar improving markedly after his Freshman year. I laughed, but we never got to see it. While there is no doubt Jones will improve, as anyone would, we’re not witnessing the growing pains of a budding star. This guy sucks, and he’s going to be fun to watch as a Texas fan. You can’t teach smart. Check out NDS’ take here. [...]
